Sudama was a childhood friend of Lord Krishna. He was poor but lived a life of simplicity, kindness, and loving devotion. Despite his poverty, he was always content and devoted to Krishna. Sudama faced extreme poverty and hardship, and at the urging of his wife, he decided to visit Krishna in Dwarka to seek some help, though he felt ashamed to ask for it. Sudama had nothing to offer as a gift but carried with him nothing but a small handful of flattened rice (poha), as that was all he had. When Sudama arrived, Krishna received him like a king. To the astonishment of all around, he treated him warmth, with great love and respect, washing his feet and treating him like an honoured guest. Krishna, aware of Sudama's humble gift, eagerly accepted the simple offering of flattened rice with immense joy, illustrating that the value of a gift lies in the intention and in the love with which it is offered, not its material value. After spending some time together reminiscing about their childhood, Sudama left without asking for any financial help, trusting in Krishna’s love. When he returned home, he found that his humble hut had been transformed into a grand mansion, and his family was dressed in fine clothes. Through Krishna's grace, he was blessed with wealth and prosperity as a reward for his devotion and the humble offering of rice. A true offering is made with love and not with the expectation of any reward. This special incident occurred on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. It is a beautiful day on which to be charitable and give to others.
